HMT Sancta Maria promotes healthy lifestyles and physical activity, with the aim of improving the health of the local community. Ride with the Pros offered the public the chance to join professional cyclists, who led a group ride over a manageable 40km that started and finished at the LC Leisure Club on Sunday 1st March, 2015. The event was free of charge and open to everyone. Riders just needed to be capable of cycling 40km, have a roadworthy bike and had to wear a helmet.
HMT Sancta Maria has a long standing history in cycling and support professional athletes, including those from Condor-JLT, and they have more recently developed their own development cycling squad for talented British junior cyclists, in addition to providing equipment to the Swansea-based Gower Go Riders youth cycle coaching.
Tony Barrett, Chief Executive of the Healthcare Management Trust (HMT) commented: “Cycling has been a great sport for us to support over recent years, and Ride with theLC Swansea Pros was a great example as to why. I can’t think of another sport where you can participate alongside some of the best athletes in the world, whatever your fitness ability, and then return back to the cafe, where you can have a chat over a cup of tea. HMT has a long-term strategy to support health in the community, and we are seeing more people climb on a bike to get fit, recover from injury or just have fun.”
The Ride with the Pros route was plotted by cyclists from the local Gower Riders Cycling Club, who offer rides for abilities. Members of the club were on hand during the ride and informed participants of further rides organised by the club, which is ideal for anyone who has caught the cycling bug and wants to take part in future rides. So, if you would like to become more involved in cycling, you can attend local rides with the cycling club – which is the perfect way to prepare for future Ride with the Pros events in Swansea.
One pro-rider commented: “It’s great to join HMT on days like this, especially when it can encourage people to get involved in sport. Ride with the Pros offered a steady ride and it was sporting event that encouraged riders of all abilities to comfortably ride together.”
About the Pros
Ride with the Pros was attended by a number of cyclists, including Ed Laverack, who was something of an unknown quantity when he signed for Rapha Condor JLT at the end of 2012, but he soon made a big impression in the team. Following a strong showing in the Bay Criteriums in Australia, his very first races for the team, Laverack was selected for the gruelling Tour of Normandy in March, a race that he duly finished.
19-year-old Laverack, who hails from Llanelli in South Wales, was a first senior in 2013, but his naturally aggressive style on the bike, and a laid-back temperament off it, helped him make a seamless transition to the senior ranks.
In 2014, Laverack, a determined all-rounder, will continue his solid adaption into the elite ranks. We were therefore honoured for Ed, HMT Academy, JLT Condor, Gower Riders attend our Ride with the Pros event, which was hosted by LC Leisure Club.

This 10 mile family route followed an ‘out and back’ course. This was led by the Gower Riders Go Ride coaches. Any riders who struggled with the distance had the option of stopping before the half way turn and could wait for the group to come back on the return leg. All children were accompanied by a responsible adult.
