Dr Nichola Stefanou, Chief Executive of Healthcare Management Trust (HMT), has been appointed as a non-executive director of Gentoo.

Nichola joined HMT in 2022 and will support Gentoo alongside her current role. She has over 20 years of experience in health and social care, including senior leadership positions in the NHS, Social Housing and higher education.

Gentoo provides more than 60,000 people in Sunderland with a place they can call home. Every year Gentoo invest millions of pounds to keep existing homes safe, secure, and compliant. They also help to deal with the UK housing crisis by building hundreds of modern homes for rent in Sunderland.

Nichola said: “I am thrilled to be joining Gentoo’s Board. I admire the work that has been done by Gentoo in the past couple of years and I am excited to contribute to its future success and growth.

“I am really passionate about integrating community services to reduce health inequalities and I believe my experience in this area will contribute to the organisation’s ongoing success.”

Emily Cox MBE, Gentoo’s Group Board Chair, said, “It’s brilliant that we are able to attract someone of Nichola’s calibre to join our already talented Board and help us continue to do the very best we can be for our customers and the community in Sunderland.”

Louise Bassett, Chief Executive Officer at Gentoo, added: “I am excited to have someone with Nichola’s background and values on our Board. Our already amazing Board have helped us achieve the highest grading for Governance in the new Consumer Standards in 2024 and I am looking forward to Nichola helping us build on this in 2025.”
