Trustee Week 2023 – An Insight Into Our Trustees – Lisa Geary
Lisa, a healthcare lawyer with over 30 years’ experience, embarked on a unique journey as a trustee at The Healthcare Management Trust just over a year ago. Her motivation was rooted in a desire to provide voluntary support to a charity aligned with her professional background. We caught up with Lisa to learn more about her motivations, the aspects she values most about HMT’s work, and the insights she’s gained along the way.
What motivated you to become a trustee at The Healthcare Management Trust?
“After spending over 30 years as a healthcare lawyer, I wanted to contribute on a voluntary basis to a worthwhile charity. There’s a lot of synergy between the work done by HMT and the types of clients I’ve worked with. I have a great interest in the healthcare sector and want to extend my impact beyond my legal career. The combination of services provided by HMT, their focus on supporting improvements in dementia care, and their strategic plans truly inspired me.”
What aspect of the Healthcare Management Trust’s work do you value and respect?
“There are many talented people working in the organisation with great ideas for growth, improvements, and innovation in the delivery of care.”
What have you personally learned during your time as a trustee for HMT?
“I have witnessed very impressive leadership and board collaboration; it’s been great to have learnt a huge amount about the range of issues which need to be addressed and covered by healthcare providers and how improvements can be delivered by focused management and collaboration.”
Why do you think others should consider becoming trustees of charities?
“It is a fabulous way to give back your time and help others by using the professional expertise you have acquired whilst at the same time pushing new personal boundaries and learning new approaches. It gives a lot of perspective and insight into areas of work you may not have experienced before. It is a lot of fun too and there are many driven and talented people working as trustees from whom you can learn and continue to develop. The main reason is because it is a great thing to help a charity achieve its objectives.”
